Do These Trousers Make Me Look Phat?

Quirks of WoW will explore often-overlooked but quite frankly strange phenomena in the World of Warcraft, from cross-dressing to all-out sexchanges.

Men’s Obsession With Clothes in WoW

Dear Men of WoW,

Yes, they are clothes. You are wearing them on your body. Ok, so they are made from chain mail or steel or leather, but they are clothes nonetheless. You even have rings on and a necklace. It’s a very pretty necklace despite the fact that it’s called the Jagged Neck Splicer of Doom. And that trinket looks like a sparkly little dangly brooch. Something Great Aunt Thelma willed to you.

I can’t say how many times I’ve found myself quietly laughing at the irony when a sudden, passionate gear discussion breaks out among gamers. And because approximately 80% of gamers are male, most of the time these discussions are among guys. And these discussions aren’t just about the merits of one item’s stats over another, they also get fussed over how good or bad they look in the item. Now tell me, ladies, how many times have you prayed that the man in your life would mysteriously lose that frayed and stained t-shirt? Well, can you believe how quickly men go through clothes in WoW?

And then we have the extremes. The guys who change their hair style all the time. And the gender change. Lately, my entire guild appears filled with female draenei. The guys just explain that their gear looks better on a woman.

I can honestly say that I have spent very little time worrying about how my toon looks. And while my research is observational in nature at this point, I’m quite sure most female gamers worry less about their toon’s clothes than their male counterparts.

So the next time you want to make fun of your girlfriends, sisters, or wives for worrying about how they look in their new pair of jeans, just remember that the last time you didn’t like how you looked in your gear you put your poor character through a painful and humiliating sex change operation.

Sincerely,

Monava

  • I must admit, I do obsess slightly over how Holyshell looks. Anything purple and/or matching other bits preferably. She has serious (and I mean serious) bagspace issues because of all the level 60 and 70 gear, seasonal outfits and general pretty dresses (just in case).

Having said that there are a fair few guys in the guild that are just as bad, and funnily enough they do all seem to have a female toon. Exo, who comments here pretty regularly so I know he’ll read this, changed from male to female draenei and I must admit looked a lot hotter for it :D

    Looks > all.

I check myself out every time I log in =D

  • I snipped off my warlock’s bits as his shoulders looked like American football shoulders! I never rode my dreadsteed as he looked like he would crush it. Sorry to say Orc male warlocks look hideous dreadsteeds, felsteeds, boney ponies! Needless to say now that Gothmogs is a she I finally get to ride my dreadsteed.

I changed from Undead (male) to Blood Elf (male) for 2 reasons:
    1. WotF nerf
    2. Looks

I know BE male looks “gay” and most people make fun of them but I like the way clothes look on them over undead (bones sticking out of everything and equipping a tunic makes you wanna scratch out your eyes) and seriously.. if you have to chose between BE male or BE female, I’d rather be gay then a tranny ^^

But I won’t equip gear that looks better over gear that is better in stats. Being a PvPer you just can’t afford that kind of luxery so my looks adjusting go as far as showing headpiece yes/no (cloak is always disabled, hate the looks of them)

Imo they should add this option aswell for shouldergear, since shoulders usually don’t fit the rest of your gear
