Our Survey Says: Website Fiend

How many times have I pointed a guildie* to Gear Wishlist? I’ve no idea, but it’s got to be a lot. This is an excellent example of a far-too-underused and yet extremely useful game-related website, and only a few of us seem to have ever even heard about it. I’ve been an avid user of these sites for a long time, in TBC for example my obsessions were Warcrafter and Loot Rank. Yet I’m constantly reminded that most people haven’t only not heard of these sites, they actively don’t care.

Do you use these resources to improve your character and your gameplay, or do you prefer the more relaxed “it’ll be fine” approach to character development?

How do you feel towards WoW-related websites?

  • Sites like this are all well and good, but the person using them still needs to undestand the stats their character needs. Ie, all the lock items high up on the list are based on hit (for Destruction) I don’t need hit thank you very much, I have hit coming out of my ears, so what is listed their is not necessarily BIS. If I used just this to form my kit I would be sacrificing spell power/haste for a stat I did’nt need and therefore decresing my dps!

  • I prefer maxdps.com for working out gear. As I can tell it I what debuffs I have (like 3% hit) and it’ll factor that in when calculating my gear. Gear Wishlist doesn’t do that so I’m getting inaccurate lists with hit valued more highly than it should be.

That aside Gear Wishlist is best at giving you a good idea. But it’s really just that, a good idea, a sense of direction, not an absolute set in stone BIS list. If you really really want the specifics of what’s better by with 0.1% margin, use a spreadsheet. If you want the general idea, Gear Wishlist is fine.

I have always tried external sites for helping to improve game play, I dont normally get alot of play time so when I am on I want to be as prepared as possible – this goes for class abilities and skills/enchants/talents etc but also for gear. However I normally just go for wowhead.

I used to use Maxdps but it can skew the data a bit depending on your char, for example if you are low on hit it will give hit a much higher value and base all the gear it recommends on hit over other stats so if you were to get all the No.1 items it suggests you would be severly over hit and under on things like crit for example.

If I use any sites its normally from the class discussion forums within mmo for example or more specifics like Tankspot for my warrior.

But I will give Gear Wishlist another try as I have only been on there a few times.

  • Macksie – If you’re low on hit, Hit should be given a higher value XD

There’s options on maxdps to set what buffs you have, so if you have a Draenei and 3% hit buff or something, you can select it and it’ll stop recommending hit gear

Ive never used any websites to calculate my gear,
Ive never even used any websites to see talent specs.

Id rather make and think about them myself instead of copying stuff from others.
High chance that someone who uses the websites gets a little higher dps, but it feels so non-personal to copy everything and just follow whatever some database says.

ah well, Im not a big PvEer anyways ^^
