A common question you hear from newer players is how to make a lot of money very quickly. The stock answer appears to be “take skinning and mining, sell everything you gather, and worry about real professions later”. To an extent this is great advice, though I’ve seen people get to 80, change their professions, and spend the rest of their lives in poverty.
My question is this: on an established character, how do you find yourself making your gold?

I’m playing the AH… Works like a charm =D..
I dunno where my cash comes from. A variety of places I suppose.
I brought a newly dinged 80 through an army of random heroics and had like 400G extra at the end of the day.
Even in raids I tend to come out in positive numbers. Since my characters are almost entirely self-sufficient I mostly spend my cash on repairs.
Aha – making gold. A favourite topic of mine.
Contrary to popular opinion amongst the majority of players in WoW, generating large amounts of gold is as easy as [insert flavour of the month jezebel or Callum Best]. It just takes time, a little planning and most importantly, the courage to carry through your convictions. And be prepared to play hardball on theh AH from time to time. There’s no hard and fast rule.
However the one major advantage I have is that I use my professions to the max when I can. IE I have 2 maxed JCs, a Scribe with a full compliment of glyphs, maxed tailor, enchanter, blacksmith and again 2 alchemists, with both elixir and trans masteries. And I can honestly say I keep them all very busy.
Learn to use Auctioneer and Quick Auctions addons and then ye are set for gold making nirvana.
There’s a link to my gold making blog via my AzerothChat website. It’s not as informative as some sites, but it gives you an insight into the fevered mind of an AH player.
That damn blog is exactly why I spent 10 grand “investing” in various items from the AH last week, made an undisclosed amount of profit, and posed this here question today
I am of mind leveling enchanting killed me forever, I have no concept of making gold. I always have just enough and it took me a year to get epic flying for Mogs and even then a good mate helped me LOL.
However after reading your blog, Mags and various other blogs, I am inspired to catch a wake up call, except you scribes are ruthless folk
I cant sell my glyphs, as there are at least 3 glyphing king pins that I have no hope in hell to break BAH and you Mags are probably one of them
Damn Glyph Mafia!
Since I cant raid, I have decided to try and get WOW Rich. Still getting to grip with Auctioneer and leveling mining, inscription and herbalism, so I have some hope in Cataclysm.
my cashflow has always been low,
I hate farming, dailys, grinding and any kind of boring stuff.
yet my gold always increases and never decreases because I dont buy anything.
ofc every now and then I need enchants and stuff, but I actually pay for them using my income from making portals.. god loves mages eh ^^
If I make any money I do it by
1. doing tourny dailys, they give nice quick gold
2. going to WG for an easy 10.000 honor, buy a red gem and sell it for 200g
3. making bets on dueling.. won myself a couple of gold and other stuff with this.. think I won about 500g and an epic blue gem.
atm I have 4200 gold, and some alt money.. think I have 4500-5000g in total.
not much but it is enough to keep my mage going.
I still want an alchemist to make myself an epic gem every day, since the mats for epic gem costs like 20g and you can sell the gem for 200g. looks like a pretty sweet steady income to me.
Glyphs are as funny business. Yes there’s shedloads of gold to be made from it but it does require a lot of time and money. What yer profits are depend on many factors the main one being the cost of herbs on the AH. Then there is the milling and scribing process which is not exactly quick. It’s one of the few professions/money makign enterprises which I would actually regard as a grind.
Now whilst there is a glyph mafia on the AH, the main problem to earning money is those alts levelling inscription just to get the shoulder enchants. However that may now reduce now that Hodir rep is so easy to come by. What the levellers would do is just dump whatever ones they made onto the AH at a loss basically becasue they don’t care about makign gold, they just want rid of the things. These are known as levellign glyphs and you’ll always see them on teh AH for less than 2g. It’s annoying for me but you learn to live with it and you ultimately don’t make those glyphs yourself. Levelling guides recommend certain ones to make and that’s teh root of the problem. EG, glyph of Lightning Blot, a must for all Ele Shammies, is one of those “glyphs”, so what should sell for a decent price, as its a demand item, sells for sweet FA.
I’ve gone from making 2k a day on glyphs to making 500g now but I don’t mind as I made a decision to spend less time at it. Other markets have a better gold per hour ratio than glyphs. Though it’s not unreasonable to think glyphs may again become lucrative once Cataclysm arrives and teh goblins and worgens come out to play.
300g on account with three lvl 80s.. flasks/arrows/repairs and a complete noob at the ah house.. i just end up buying silly outfits that give one min of entertainment.
LMAO!!! I am not the only one except I dont buy silly outfits.
I have been making quite some money on a sinester way…it involves drugged out gnomes and making them come back for more……. J/K
Even tho many people don’t think it is possible I make nearly all my gold by doing what I enjoy the most in this game: PvP!
How? By playing other people their Rogues! This might sound strange but me and my normal arena partner have made quite some money out of it.
I will explain hows it works.
Every once in a while I get a whisper from someone telling me: I heard from my friend that you boost people in arena. Can you boost me in Arena to XXXX Rating? I will pay you XXXX gold if you play my rogue.
If I ain’t to busy playing arena on my own rogue and the dude his gear is ok I will discuss it with my “Companion” first.
I ask my companion if he is up for some boosting.
If my “Companion” agrees I will start a chat with the person that wants the boost.get to know eachother better ( Afterall I play on someone else his account and I could be a goldstealing-geardeleting prick, which I ain’t
), add eachother on msn/skype and eventually the person in question gives me his account info.
When that is done I first of all invite my hunter alt to the arena team and make him the teamleader so I could kick the guy his rogue if something happens. ( The person that wants the boost could scam me and my companion and not pay us after we are done )
Then me and my companion start playing.
Most people ask for a 0 to 1800 rating boost which takes us 2 to 3 hours. The reward for this boost fully depends on what the person is willing to give..rewards may vary between 1000g up to 1500g, which will be split with my companion ofc.
Some people ask for a 0 to 2000 rating boost which takes us anywhere between 3 to 5 hours or even more depending on the teams we are facing and the gear of the rogue I am playing ( Sadly Gear > Skill at one point ).
The ammount of gold we get offered for doing such boosts are sometimes way to high in my opinion.
Sometimes people offer 3000g and a individual would offer 4000g. As I do have a heart I tell them I will do it for 2000g, which still is alot ofc but hey time is money…
You always have exceptions and one guy I will never forget he wanted us to boost his rogue up to 2000 rating and said he would give us 6000g in total. At first I declined straight away and told him that was waaay to much, he however kept pushing and said it’s no problem I want you to do it for 6000g, 6000g is nothing for me.
Eventually I was like: Okay fine… I was really doubting if I did the right thing. Afterall 6000g is a huge ammount of gold. Yet I wondered what he meant with 6000g is nothing for me….
Once I logged on his account and opened his bags to equip PvP gear I couldn’t believe what I saw…the guy had no less then 120,000 gold in his bag..all of sudden it became very clear why 6000g was nothing for him
.
I could have ninja’d all of his gold if I wanted to but I didn’t. I HAVE A HEART I TELL YA! Once the boost was done he laughed on ventrilo out of happiness and I got my gold. Still I felt a bit guilty but I tought: Ah well…atleast I made his day
The largest ammount of gold I earned with PvP ever was 10.000g, this was done under 2 minutes. How? By winning a duel naked.
The story:
The guy in question had been going on in trade for ages ranting at PvP’rs in general and how much they sucked. So there’s me being drunk as fuck telling him that I want to bet 10.000g that I could take him in a duel naked with just my weapons equipped. I told him I would meet up in dalaran sewers and that I wanted to see if he had 10.000g first.
I showed my 10.000g he showed his, we both traded the gold to a person we both did trust and he would give the gold to the winner.
I won the duel and got the 10,000g. xD
So..screw proffesions and auctioneering! PvP is the way forward! xD
( Man this post is so long, it could be a blog!
)
TL;DR version: I make more then enough gold with doing PvP.
imo, you can ask allot more money for 2k rating boosting in such a short time.
2000 gold nowadays is nothing.
but ofc the problem is that you can only do rogues, thats thins our your custommers allot
our = out
Roll a DK, do the starting zones. Sell everything, delete, rinse & repeat
I actually leveled a DK for fun on my friend her server today but those quests give f*ck all
sounds like hell xD
I ‘play’ the AH, but only on a limited range of good that I know, i.e. herbs and flasks/alchy, but it brings in a few k gold per week without any real effort.
I top up that income with what I make from heroic runs – they’re quick and usually pull in some cash plus drops – easy money.
Well I obviously just plain suck at making gold. I keep running out and my primary source was levelling (4 x 80′s now) but I have far less time. Completing quests that I havent done after hitting 80 is an ok source but takes quite a while and so I decided to start an alchemist with tranmute mastery as I was told that is the way to go – however since then I have never had a proc on transmutes in almost 3 weeks… is it something I am not doing? It definately shows transmute mastery
I am a sad panda.
Maybe I should start learning the AH game ;> My alts were all selling their primordial saronites so I made a bit from that at least.
Ael’s transmutes aren’t proccing either, I remember back in the day when transmutes were bugged and procced nothing for a month, perhaps it’s the same thing again :S
