Duel or Decline?

The only word that can describe my futile attempts in player versus player combat is tragic. Okay, I haven’t as of yet had a spell reflect that kills me.

Arena is a no go area. World PVP is just a severe embarrassment and I am the epitome of a carebear.

No “If it’s red it’s dead” mantra with me. Don’t get me wrong I get tempted even though I am slightly against the principle of ganking baby levels, but most of the time I just let them get on with it, the biggest reason being that they may actually have a chance to annihilate me. Yes I am that bad and if you’re over, say, 65, you may get the oppurtunity to boast in /g “Just pwned a noob level 80 lock.”

I still love the odd forays into battlegrounds. Indeed I am a sucker for punishment, at least here I can hide behind the masses and happily dot anything that’s red and moves. That is until that one player finds me and when that player finds me I become the big “get your honour here” special.

How did the fail all start?

Now you may ask, “How did you get so bad?”, or more accurately, “How did you never get at least semi-competent?”

I think it all started at level 1 as a young strapping, then male orc shadowbolting boars. I was determined to get out of this awful starting area as fast as I (slowest leveler known to Wow) can.

Along came a level 5 troll,  who must have sensed even then that I was a /flex candidate. He immediately started spamming duels, I declined, not much point in dueling a level 5 with just shadowbolt and also I loathe when people randomly spam duels, invites and trade windows without a word. So I ignored it yet again he spammed and after yet more spamming that annoying troll laugh followed. I declined, I tried to walk away, didn’t work, so I just thought what the hell, let him duel me, let me lose and let me go on completing important tasks of shadowbolting boars and scorpids to oblivion.

Green went to red in 0-3 seconds, and suddenly I was on my knees admitting defeat. He was very chuffed with himself and immediately ran off to the next baby level 1 to /flex his skills!

Consequently, my whole leveling journey I was besieged with players at least 5 levels higher than me, spamming duels. Even at mid levels I had 80′s thinking they were l33t and spamming duels.

Question now is, what is it about some players, wanting to duel baby levels? Where all it takes is one auto-attack, wand dot or whatever minor arsenal they have. I don’t know about you but it cannot possibly be satisfying winning in conditions like that.

Needless to say nowadays I stay far away from duels, I am absolutely hopeless at them. So will I ever defend X roads on my own? “No, Not going to happen, No”

No more chicken

So yesterday I decided, enough was enough. Except this time I tried life outside Northshire Abbey as a mage. I was blasting wolves and Defias people. So far peace, blessed peace from duels.

But no, a young rogue decided he wanted to duel. Fortunately for him, he actually asked whether I wanted to duel. No problem I shall not back away even if he is a (/cower) rogue. I followed him outside the human nooblet area and this time with all guns or fireballs blazing and thanks to human perception I got an opening and proceeded to blow him into smithereens. Booohaa my first achievement yay! Then a paladin came along, “Triniy” has challenged you to a duel”, accept and ofcourse inevitable defeat. Damn OP paladins!

Oh, The shame….

“Dbestrogue” and I became friends, and he decided he could take on my Warlock with his level 73 Paladin. We met outside the Westfall place in Grizzly Hills and sigh yes he killed me but in my defense I had the damn guards on me and plus I wasn’t even at full health. And, and, and…. I hadn’t played my warlock in ages guess it all evened things out, with me being 7 levels higher. Oh I forgot and my latency was at its Third World best. Okay, enough with the excuses I am crap.

Once my “gold” flow has improved I shall work on a level 1 twink and show those level 5 trolls, who is the boss! (I can dream) but in the meantime if you’re also pretty rubbish at dueling or fights to the death, come find me, I can definitely restore your confidence with my “l33t” pvp skills.

How do you guys feel about dueling as a lowbie? Have you always dueled? Are you the person that is 5 levels higher harassing lowbies? Is there even a point dueling when you only have 1-3 skills?

  • I had a level 1 twink once, I would stand in northshire with normal gear until someone would duel me I would equip my twink gear.

I am not sure if it is still possible to twink a level 1 nowadays since blizzard nerfed it, but it sure is alot of fun owning people that are level 10~15. ( Large ammount of my damage came from Fiery Weapon btw, a MUST if u get a level 1 twink :P )

  • I don’t like duel challenges >.> I fail that hard at PVP.

My best bragging right? I beat Vossie in a duel and no I didn’t massively outlevel him, just by a couple.

I don’t mind joining the odd ‘For The Alliance’ raid if I’m not doing anything else, and if Hordies invade a town I’m in I’ll happily go help defend the king, but I always decline duels because I fail big time at one on one PvP. And I hate the people who emote /chicken at me when I decline. They’re almost always DKs or paladins. I mean, yeah, like my dinky huntard is going to wtfpwn a retadin. -.-

I did enjoy doing the odd BG until I entered WSG one day on my baby priest, only to be bombarded with ‘OMG wtf noob u suck u only got XX HP lololol’ etc etc from the l33tist twink twats. I’ve never been in a BG since.

    • Awww, ignore the /bg whiners, even though I am crap I still have fun in battlegrounds. Am loving them on my rogue. Granted rogues are not easy to play but they do allow some room for my ditziness. I was also on my baby priest and I was called a noob for healing the flag carrier and not dropping everything to go for our flag. Funny all the noob callers were all farming in the middle. Dont be put off my some twits!

On low levels, it doesn’t really depend on skill, but rather on class. At level 1-10 are the best duelers Rogues and Paladins, sometimes even Druids.

  • Uhm

Never found pleasure in duelling / PVP.
And when my rogue gets invited for duels I tend to bore the other player to death with saps and whatelse I can thow at him/her to CC.

And when some alliance attack Xroads I tend to /yawn at them.
On other occasions my feelings towards pvp flagged players is that if you’re flagged you ask to be attacked no matter what the level is.

Hehe, I remember how worried you used to get about PVP! Do you remember the arena team we did with Burz & Sis? That was a laugh! I don’t think we got past 1500 rating lol :-)
I’ve never been great at PVP either, but it’s fun now and then in bgs, etc. You’d think levelling my first toon on a PVP server would have made some positive difference…
Cool site btw, makes me miss ED!
    (see I commented!)

  • Ha ha ha ha definetly NOT of I play a mage!!

  • And it couldn’t just be that he’s more skilled than they are?

Mages, Frost in particular, have a weakness to the Destro Lock. Ain’t that right Vossie?

  • Sazon

I don’t ‘do’ pvp. Before getting into MMO’s I spent years playing FPS games, running LAN parties and the like. When I started playing MMO’s I had had enough of pvp. Even when I did the Chef achievement I did no more than go into the battleground and put down the feasts.

I also hate and resent compulsory pvp like WG.

That said… When pvp breaks out somewhere outside a battleground then I will be on the front line. I have lost count of how many times I have flown to TM or XR just to sort out some alliance plonkers who think it’s clever to quest kill mobs 10 levels below them.

Sadly, I remain truly terrible at pvp!

  • Mages are very good in 1vs1, there is the possibility to kill any class. but when you are new to a mage or dont know exactly what to do, you also get raped by any class.

Its not like mages are a no-skill class that can spam some frostbolts and win by doing so, if you screw up some of your key skills (blink vs rogue for example) you get raped in seconds. waste your blink on a rogue -> you have to IB the stunlock -> now your IB is gone and the Cloak of Shadows eats you.

But I will not say mages arent very strong, I love them and I love them even more in 1vsX situations.

1v1 i just end up in a panic and forget all my keybinds..same with arena, then I stare at my bartender which i never do in bgs or raids, but in world pvp or battlegrounds I relax and outplay most classes also i play a number of classes myself and would say im able to handle myself pretty well. I think duels are good to work out how to deal with classes but, theres no surprise element and all your strongest cooldowns are free.. such as killing spree which can pretty much burn down some classes… to spammy spam.

So I don’t like duels at all and i find i just lose to complete tards most of the time..even tho i have all the snazzy keybinds backpeddle unbound etc and know what im doing.. but in another situation i destroy them (if im not drunk :S)

Well firstly Goffs, great story. I empathise.

Second point: your yooman mage toon is missing a ‘mi’ at the end of it’s name. I’m guessing you weren’t allowed more. But at least someone got it. ^^

Third: First PVP incident I ever had was when Bonzo was at level 40 or something, about a year into the game (I too was an extraordinarily slow leveller). I was exploring, because I wanted to see the whole world and sod the level requirements (this being the reason I took so long to level, I think – yay for pixel hopping to the top of a raving and diving off the edge into a level ?? area!). Anyway, I’m hitting stuff and this gnome lock comes along and stands right next to me and flags himself PVP. Like I had a clue what he was doing (I was even more of a nub then than I am now, if you can believe that). So I thunderclap because I’m being wailed upon by three mobs and thunderclap is such a uber aoe ability (:/), and that hits him and suddenly I’m flagged PVP and he wtfpwns me. No idea what level he was. And that’s when my only alliance character was born. Create character, flame the living hell out of , /ignore , log out, continue exploring with Bonz.

Last point: PVP on my DK was just awesome. Seriously, what a fun class to play battlegrounds with. Got to 80, decided to level my lock a bit, so I thought ‘Hey, why not do a daily battleground and get some XP there?’ I got spanked like a ginger stepchild. So I sulked for a bit, and then a few weeks later I thought I’d try it again. What a difference a competent team makes! And what a difference knowing how to play makes! My advice is to NEVER run in first. Target a pally or rogue (because they’re the most hateful, yes indeedy they are), put a curse of on them, dot them up a bit, and FEAR! Fear is your friend, now and forever; it deserves great big second helpings of ice cream and some extra special loving. Save your insta-fear for one on ones or desperate situations, possibly macro-ing it up with a healthstone. Dot, fear, dot dot, run away, WIN!!1one

    Good luck with that. ^^

Oh dear, lots of typos and everything I put in greater than/less than symbols not being displayed (damn you html code, damn you to hell!) = a very sad looking post. Apologies for sounding like an artard. Well, more than usual.

  • “So I thunderclap because I’m being wailed upon by three mobs and thunderclap is such a uber aoe ability (:/), and that hits him and suddenly I’m flagged PVP and he wtfpwns me.”

AoE effects do not trigger PvP, if you dont have your pvp enabled then it just wont hit the persons that do have pvp enabled.

  • Bonzo

“AoE effects do not trigger PvP, if you dont have your pvp enabled then it just wont hit the persons that do have pvp enabled.”

Rly? Hm… I wonder if they changed that?
Like I said, this incident was about a year after release of vanilla, and all I did (AFAIK) was thunderclap. The rest was my standard rotation for PVE fights.

    • Sazon

Don’t know about these days, but once upon a time Druid thorns would be enough to flag you as pvp – Accidentally pull a pvp flagged mob (40 levels below you), they hit you and suddenly you’re flagged for pvp.

I am pretty sure that AoE effects did used to get you pvp tagged.

  • that I don’t know… I played since late TBC and dinged 70 3days after WOTLK hit…
Im a new age kiddo! :D
