Our Survey Says: Peer Pressure

An easy one for you this week! I remember when I first heard about WoW. I’d been living like a student for a couple of years despite working and hadn’t had internet, so I was completely out of the loop when a friend

mentioned he was getting it. I

yelled at him not to be silly, because at the time he was working 12 hour days and I worried he’d have a nervous breakdown.

Of course after the first night of sitting in his bedroom calling out instructions from the manual while he, like a typical bloke, dived straight in and then found he didn’t know how to make his character sit down, I was officially counting the days until I could get my hands on some internet and join him. A few months later, in Summer 2006, my first character was born (and then crashed in IF never to be seen again.

Anyway! The upshot of this rambling is that I want to know how did you get into this game? Do you have bragging rights because you knew about it since Beta, or did your husband hassle you to join to avoid wife aggro?

If your partner is to blame, feel free to leave a comment and let us know whether you’re male or female. I think it’ll be interesting to see just

how many girls get their man into WoW rather than the usual.

How did you get into WoW in the first place?

  • I cursed MMO’s at one point, I said I didn’t see the point in paying ever single month for one game when I could instead buy a new game each month.

I underestimated both the price and how BIG WoW is.

So a friend got me a 14 day trial (this is before Recruit a Friend), the opening movie inspired me to start an Undead Warlock named Necrall…

I was hooked on my first green.

I was strolling around Gamestation one Saturday afternoon in July 2008, with my freshly-acquired wages burning a hole in my purse, and I saw the game sitting on the shelf for a tenner. It had a picture of a night elf on the front (Tyrande Whisperwind?) and, being a fan of fantasy, I thought it looked pretty good and decided to give it a go. I was warned by the guys behind the counter when I bought it that I would get absolutely hooked on it. After a six-hour installation that sent my crappy Internet connection into meltdown, I logged in and made a night elf hunter…

I’ve never been able to look my old PlayStation One in the face again.

I was fed up with the cash shop, grindathon that was my first MMO (Fiesta). Looked around for others but was a bit wary of WoW. I thought it was so big, so popular and so old that, as a newcomer, I’d have a rough time. That it would be full of uber nerds with no community other than insults and teenage bragging.

Then reason kicked in; “The millions who play can’t all be like that!” I thought, and took the plunge. My Uncle, who also played, found out and RAF’d me. Was handy having someone to show me around when I got lost, and boy did I need it, since WoW to me was HUGE! Then he quit a week or so later, in a mood about the pre-wrath Scourge invasion thing.

I saw Shell’s post in the newcomers bit about the Weasles, jumped realms, and was hooked from then on. Darn game still keeps dragging me back even though I managed a good few months break from it. It’s an addiction!

  • I was into Everquest… after 4 years of EQ, the game was getting stale (and as I’m on the Mac the platform was already 2 years outdated – Planes of Powah!). The guild I was in had several members drop EQ to play WoW, so when Blizz offered the 10 day free trial around the time of TBC’s release, I checked it out. Been addicted since.

  • I was training in Germany and went to a friend’s place for the weekend. The ENTIRE family played apart from the mother. So everyone; my friend her boyfriend, her brother and me were all crammed into one room all playing. They all wanted me to go Ally, so they could help me. Meh, I went Horde looked cooler. The father played Horde (multi boxed)

I thought I could get a mount that weekend. Pfft only made it to level 10 had 30 levels to go. I came back to SA and bought the game for myself and rolled a human warlock ( the shame) later on I began leveling my baby Orc lock, as I had come to my senses and realised Horde was the only way (No faction change) So Voila I now have two fel mistresses, both Horde now although my ex-Alliance lock is in a pitiful state and is now running my sweatshop

I was living in the US when the game came out and my OH bought me a copy as part of a rather cunning plan to ensure he had enough time to play his own games and stop me from “dragging him off to do stuff!”

After 30 mins I was hooked, his evil plan worked and now 5 years (with a gap to move home) later i’m still playing. Damn him!!

I was still happily grinding away at Diablo 2 after about 10 years, when a work colleague (Diet on Emerald Dream, when he plays) told me about this new game called WOW, based on the Warcraft universe. I’d never played Warcraft, but another friend had (Tripswitch – again, when he decides to be online). It was highly recommended.

I had no clue what an MMO was, but signed up for the Beta anyway. Thus ended my social life, and very nearly my marriage too.

Like so many others here, I damn the person who introduced me to the game. I damn them to hell… :(

  • Yup think thats the thing about WOW its the social aspect that feeds the addiction. If it was a single player game it would have landed up with all my other games gathering cobwebs! Yup, and you all right DAMN this game :P

Ever since I held my first NES controller in my hand at the age of 8 I was hooked on gaming. Years later I discovered Blizzard and thus Diablo I & II & the Warcraft series, I was hooked.
When World of Warcraft came out I didn’t immediately buy it as I thought my computer wouldn’t be able to handle it.
After a year and just having broken up with my then girlfriend, my niece’s boyfriend said to fire up WoW and see what it’s like. I liked it from the first minute and now, several years later I’m still playing, a few girlfriends have come and gone, but WoW survived them all ;) .
Now to find a woman who plays WoW as well and I’m set I guess :P .

I was in the throws of an EVE addiction when the game was released, but I bought WoW immediately and gave it a go (preferring the fantasy landscape). But with friends still persitant in EVE and not really having any idea what to do with myself I dropped it for a long time and resorted back to what I knew.

Months and months down the line some buddies of mine picked WoW up and were really getting into it, and finally with a reason to play and group to socialise with I started a new char and fought the good fight. The game wasn’t particularly girlfriend (now wife) friendly, but I put a decent amount of time into the it when I could (without really accomplishing anything!) and I had a riot with the Fighting Mongooses.

I’ve since left the game with little interest in returning (that’s the lie I tell myself btw) but such did I enjoy the game, the guild and the people I drop in on forums and chat to friends still playing and the old pangs for it come back. Even to the extent of a pre-baby full reinstall! However, once the dolcet tones of the login screen weaved around my house and into the unfinished babies room I knew that it was a hobby I’d not be able to assume.

    Maybe…
