Achieve This! Dwarfageddon

First off an apology to anyone who thought they’d finally deciphered our posting schedule, because this should have gone out on Monday. Totally not my fault! *cough* anyway…

Killing a lot of things very very quickly has always imbued us with a sense of power, and now we get achievement points for it too! What more could you possibly want from a Thursday evening? Apart from cake, but that goes without saying.

This achievement is available in both 10 and 25-man versions of Ulduar, but since it’s located before the first boss there is no need to get saved to complete it. There’s also no need to have the slightest clue about raiding, which is nice. I’ll deal with the 10-man version first since this is the one I completed last night when bored.

You will technically need one friend

Since Ulduar is of course a raid, that means you need to convince at least one person to form a raid group with you to get in in the first place. While this achievement is technically soloable, I chose to be more social and invite my raidbuddy along for the ride.

Siege or chopper?

The original strategy for this achievement involved a siege engine, but our success was gained on choppers which was much more fun since you can actually move faster than walking. Siege engines no doubt have their devotees, but who doesn’t want to be in a motorbike that can jump?

Whichever vehicle you go for, remember to wear your highest ilvl gear to give it that bit extra health. Stats don’t matter, just pile on those ilvls.

The method (unless you’ve defied me and gone siege)

Step 1: Make sure you know wtf your buttons do before heading off down the ramp. This is an important step!

The first thing you’ll probably notice when heading down the ramp is that there are some scary giants running directly for you with murder in their eyes. These are actually pretty easy to avoid on a chopper, whereas in a siege you’d need to kill these and then run away like a girl. If you get too close to the Colossus that will probably join in at some point, or anything else that threatens to take the shine off your bike, just hit 3 and speed away cackling.

To get to your target of 100 dwarves, especially with two of you whizzig about doing the aggroing, should only take a minute or so. Unfortunately there’s no way to tell when you definitely have enough but if you’ve done a couple of laps around the first row of 3 towers and maybe dipped into the big pile of dwarves standing about gormlessly behind them you should be sorted.

Start pulling them back towards the ramp, bearing in mind that some of what you’ve collected will be casters and will need extra time to wander over to the others. We dropped our tar in front of the ramp where we intended to do the slaughter, no idea if it actually ignites from a chopper’s own weapons but it certainly can’t hurt.  Whizz round your tar splodge(s) in a circle for a couple of laps until either the stragglers have caught up and are in killing range, or the melee guys are threatening to kill you and you’ve nothing left to lose.

Now the tricky bit, communication. This is the upside of doing it solo, I guess, but if there are 2 or more of you you still only have 10 seconds in total so be sure to all start killing at the same time. A countdown from 3 served us well in this respect.

Spam button 1, try not to disconnect from the lag, achieve. Sorted. If you didn’t have enough dwarves and don’t quite make it, you can hit your speed boost again and nick off out of the instance for another try.

Notes on 25-man

The dwarves have a lot more health, and from some of the Wowhead comments it appears the chopper weapons have been nerfed against multiple targets. We tried it with 2 of us and failed, but then we did only give it one try so maybe it’s still doable. To be sure though, I’d recommend pulling together a couple more people. If anyone knows the minimum needed for an easy kill on 25-man, let me know and I’ll update.
