Money makes the world go round

Our next Famous for Five Minutes will be with Magpawacar on the wonderful subject of money money money. He will be discussing the whole affair and the effort taken to hit that magical figure of 214748g give or take a few silver which stands as the WoW gold cap.

A mark, a yen, a buck, or a pound
A buck or a pound
A buck or a pound
Is all that makes the world go around,
That clinking clanking sound
Can make the world go ’round.

Enough of the impromptu show tunes, I am posting this up in advance, as for this instalment, on a subject that’s so close to our hearts I would like the readers of Emerald Dreamers to contribute to the interview.

So if you have any questions or would like to quiz Magz on exactly how it was done or even ask him for a loan, post here, be sure to use your characters name so I can incorporate that into the interview. Cheers all!

  • I can also guarantee that none of my tips will involve someting which I have just seen on teh AH. Some charlatan called Acershaman has posted a stack of 20 Lichbloom on teh AH for 700g. In my eyes that’s plain shifty and downright immoral. Gold can be made easily without resorting to ripping people off deliberately. Am wondering a thread can be made naming and shaming these blatant fools.

  • Some people really are fools and try their luck and whats worse there may even be some fools that buy that!

    I also wantz a pony pl0x!

  • Or it was an accident due an Addon.

QuickAuctions for example have a base fallback value of 9999G. If there is none of that item on AH it uses the fallback.

Due to forgetting this, I once posted a bunch of Glyphs for 9999G each.

  • Level 1 alt

most likely the new AH system, meaning to post at 35g a stack not 35g a piece(=700g)

  • Okay Magz! Now the first question, oh and Mol and I still want a pony :P

buuuut which profession do you find the most profitable?
ie: Insciption seems like a money market but the glyph Mafia is just meh?

Ok, this question wasn’t aimed at me, but I thought I’d relay my experience anyway because I like sticking my nose in where it doesn’t belong.

Just before the final patch pre-WOTLK, I read all about inscription, and that it was (potentially) based on herbs. So I selected my level 70 hunter and specced him herbing and mining – a hunter/gatherer in essence (see what I did there?) I filled up every bank and bag slot I had on two separate banky alts with herbs (and minerals to a lesser extent in the hunter’s bank), and waited. Then the patch hit and inscription was introduced. I dropped tailoring on my mage (I did qq a bit, having made the effort to level that up to max), and started making glyphs.

When WOTLK hit I put every glyph on the AH, undercutting other glyphs (some were put on at daft prices) and setting what I thought was a reasonable price for others. Then I started exploring on my hunter. I think I dinged 2 levels just from exploring, and by the time I was 73 I was mining titanium and herbing icethorn (Got aggro? Send pet in, grab stuffs, run like hell).
I used all the herbs to level my inscription, and all the minerals to level blacksmithing on Bonzo, and maxxed out very soon. Again, all new glyphs on the AH, often before anyone else. I also sold all left-over herbs and minerals, including titanium ore.

Over the course of about 3 months I made about 15k. I forfeited levelling Bonzo and lost my spot as the main tank for the guild, but I made a lot of money.

I don’t mean this as a ‘look at me, I’m so wonderful’ – I could care less about that. I’m just saying that people need to pay attention to what the market is doing, possibly think about what the market WILL be doing in a month, and prepare accordingly.

I suspect Magz may say something similar, and also expound the virtues of jewelcrafting. ;)

Over the years, I have seen most professions go ‘up and down’. Enchanting took a hit when the DE option was introduced for loot; herbing/flasks has just taken a hit with the ability to purchase frost lotus. As you go back, there are more and more examples.

We’ll see what Mags says, but seems to me that you need to adapt and change to keep making money.

  • Completly agree that you need to adapt, afterall never throw all your eggs in one basket.

Didn’t we all have had the same experience in Vanilla WoW (or better said: after you just started playing) where you bid on things on the AH that were 10g instead of the 10s you thought it was (and what was a reasonable price for the item)?
