Hello and welcome to another Crap Name of the Week! I’ve trawled my archive of screenshots for another genius and unearthed this…

This week’s offering illustrates two problems; the use of the letters “dk” at the end of names, and the use of the letters “dk” at the end of names of non-DKs.

Death Knights are of course commonplace now. Many of us know players who primarily play this class. Some people even like these players on a personal level. It’s just not as easy to automatically, irrationally hate those people as it was is the initial deluge of Pwnlulzdks and Irapeallyoosdks after the class’ introduction.

Fortunately, for those fuelled by an uncommon rage, there does seem to have been a spate of “-dk” naming for non-Death Knights. One common factor is that the word or words preceding the “dk” are almost invariably crap, especially in combination with this suffix.

Magicdk here, was a priest. Priests use a form of magic, but sourced from the shadow or the light. Magic is primarily associated with … mages, with the arcane. So even the first part of this name is inappropriate for this character. A double-hitter!

Perhaps it’s a joke – not a good joke, of course. Either way, representing a whole class of terrible people, Magicdk – welcome to the gallery of twats.

Well, wow. As his name suggests, he’s clearly excited. But, frankly this is so ridiculous that it tells its own story, so instead he’s an excerpt from the Wikipedia for chemist, physicist and philosopher Robert Boyle (not art director Robert F. Boyle, like what you was thinking). We may as well learn something from this shit.

Robert Boyle (25 January 1627 – 31 December 1691) was an Irish natural philosopher, chemist, physicist, and inventor, also noted for his writings in theology. He is best known for Boyle’s law.[1] Although his research and personal philosophy clearly has its roots in the alchemical tradition, he is largely regarded today as the first modern chemist, and therefore one of the founders of modern chemistry. Among his works, The Sceptical Chymist is seen as a cornerstone book in the field of chemistry.

Boyle was born in Lismore Castle, in County Waterford, Ireland, the seventh son and fourteenth child of Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Cork. Richard Boyle had arrived in Ireland in 1588 as an entrepreneur, and had amassed enormous landholdings by the time Robert was born. While still a child, Robert learned to speak Latin, Greek and French. He was not yet eight years old when, following the death of his mother, he was sent to Eton College in England, at which his father’s friend, Sir Henry Wotton, was then the provost. After spending over three years at Eton, Robert traveled abroad with a French tutor. They visited Italy in 1641, and remained in Florence during the winter of that year, studying the “paradoxes of the great star-gazer” Galileo Galilei — Galileo was elderly, but still alive in Florence in 1641.

Boyle was an alchemist; and believing the transmutation of metals to be a possibility, he carried out experiments in the hope of effecting it; and he was instrumental in obtaining the repeal, in 1689, of the statute of Henry IV against multiplying gold and silver. With all the important work he accomplished in physics – the enunciation of Boyle’s law, the discovery of the part taken by air in the propagation of sound, and investigations on the expansive force of freezing water, on specific gravities and refractive powers, on crystals, on electricity, on colour, on hydrostatics, etc. – chemistry was his peculiar and favourite study. His first book on the subject was The Sceptical Chymist, published in 1661, in which he criticized the “experiments whereby vulgar Spagyrists are wont to endeavour to evince their Salt, Sulphur and Mercury to be the true Principles of Things.”. For him chemistry was the science of the composition of substances, not merely an adjunct to the arts of the alchemist or the physician. He endorsed the view of elements as the undecomposable constituents of material bodies; and made the distinction between mixtures and compounds. He made considerable progress in the technique of detecting their ingredients, a process which he designated by the term “analysis”. He further supposed that the elements were ultimately composed of particles of various sorts and sizes, into which, however, they were not to be resolved in any known way. He studied the chemistry of combustion and of respiration, and conducted experiments in physiology, where, however, he was hampered by the “tenderness of his nature” which kept him from anatomical dissections, especially of living animals, though he knew them to be “most instructing”.

Not quite as “of the Week” as planned, having had one post then a week’s break, Crap Name of the Week is back by universally popular demand! This week’s cretin:

Reponses to the inaugural Crap Name post did raise one, and only one, legitimate counterpoint – that Amagawd is far from the worst name out there. This is very true. However, perhaps expecting a weekly series to include the absolute worst name in all of WoW every single week is a tad foolish. Not only that but it would necessitate a level of effort in the posts’ creation which is fairly obviously beyond that which I am willing to expend.

There were also the following assertions:

“Amagawd” wasn’t really that bad at all.

That the names should be mocked, not the players.

Firstly, if you like Amagawd as a name then there is a good chance you are severely mentally deficient. I’m not judging, nor am I a doctor, but I am recommending a thorough examination by a trained psychiatric practitioner. Secondly, grow a pair. That’s non-gender-specific. Grow a pair of whatever you need to grow to sound less wet.

After which navel gazing, we come to this week’s buffoon, Backrapeage.

Let’s explore this profound epithet. From ‘backrape’, should we infer that the player is alluding to an act of non-consensual anal intercourse? With this, he could be welcoming the coming of the age of back rape – finally, a period of time he can really appreciate. Or he could simply be referring to back rape with the modern extension of “-age”, in the way idiots say “pwnage”. Alternatively, perhaps he is personifying the act of “rapeage” and pleading with it to stay back, to stay away from him. He’s had quite enough. I doubt any of these options are actually true since it can’t be that this person would find simply referring to rape in their name amusing. Surely.

Moving away from rape, perhaps this is a typo, missing the “r” at the end which would reveal the player’s eagerness for the little known musical genre of backrap. Backrap is the delivery of rhyming phrases backwards, to reversed music, while facing away from the audience. Common backrapping themes include asking girls to please stop all that booty shaking, praising the community work of local law enforcement and drive-by bullet removal.

Do you know this person? Whether you do or not, it is much more important that you hate them. “Unnecessary!” you may cry, and cry I’m sure you will. That doesn’t make it wrong. Still, at least this one managed to get into a guild. Albeit a guild which is happy to take Garçon the guild-bank ninja. Hmm. Did I type that out loud?

Welcome to the inaugural edition of Crap Name of the Week! In this fascinating and indeed important series, we will be ridiculing characters with terrible, terrible names and, more importantly, the player-idiots who created them. We begin with…

There is simply no justification for this. “Amagawd” is not just a bad name, which it definitely is – for anything – but it’s a shitty word in general. You may disagree. Trendy internet people will tell you that this is your right, that you are entitled to your crazy opinions. But this is not the case.

You’ll note that the auction house here is not empty. It’s actually fairly busy over at Auctioneer Lympkin’s plinth. The heady mix of hideous dwarven woman and embarrassingly named character is too much to bear for most of the patrons. Even the cask feels pity for him. Surely he would also have moved away, were he not an inanimate wooden container.

What do you think? Is this person a fool? Feel free to disagree incorrectly in the comments.
