Devil’s Advocate – Cata’s First Raid

Wrath has served us well, gave those of us who’d never seen it the chance to do Naxxramas, it gave us the awesomeness of Ulduar, the trash-free Trial of the Crusader and the cool Icecrown Citadel. But its time has come to an end, in a matter of months we’ll be sitting down to try the first raid of Cataclysm.

*deep breath*

I hate to be the bearer of bad news… But the first Cata raid is going to be pretty easy.

Now before you get your panties all up in a bunch and hit the forums to QQ allow me to explain now only why it will happen, but why it must happen.

Jaundiced View: World firsts

Greetings! Cynicism here and before you ask, yes, the name is appropriate. I didn’t look up a random word in a dictionary and come across it like some people you see in game who have a name that looks cool but probably means ‘Sanitary Towel’ in Swahili. I’m here to write about the world-class raiding community from a personal point of view as most people have become tired of being curled in the foetal position in a darkened corner while I rant. Hopefully you will enjoy this rather mild introduction to these articles and will be prompted to read the next ones as they come out. Please be assured that it will most likely only get worse as it goes on so have a stiff drink at the ready and let us begin!

Devil’s Advocate – Do I want WoW to stay as the dominant MMO?

Interesting question I seen on MMO-Champion. Do I want WoW to stay on top?

World of Warcraft is a game I’ve sunk years into and spent a lot of money on, in subscriptions and expansions. I’ve made some very good friends there, friends I’ve carried out of the game and into the real world. I’ve written articles about the game, reviews about it. I’ve written a comic about it and various game design articles about various features of WoW.

I have invested a lot into this game. But do I want it to stay on top?

The answer is No.

The Soapbox: Spam, dirge and anal

I’m getting high up on my soapbox today to vent my anger at those people who make my eyes bleed on a daily basis, you know who you are, dirge lovers, anal fanatics and Chuck Norris fanbois.

Our Survey Says: To buy or not to buy?

Buying gold is in most peoples minds akin to treason against friends, against your community, and least importantly, usually against the End User License Agreement that you failed to read before clicking OK.

It is regarded as debilitating to the WoW economy and more so to our gaming experience leading to hacking, botting and all manner of nasties.

The Soapbox: Messy Guild banks

Nothing makes me convulse with anger more than an untidy Guild bank, 50 tries on a new boss fine, an epic fail in Wintergrasp fine, a FAILPUG fine, all of these I can handle with supreme tolerance, but put me face to face with a messy Guild bank and my neurons go sparko, my psycho side comes out and you may fine me in Elwynn incinerating cows for the fun of it, screaming WHYYYYYYY.

The Soapbox: Enterprise is NOT Star Trek

Ok so the title has nothing to do with what I’ll be ranting about today. However, it has been on my mind lately and is definitely true. My actual topic today is impatience, so it’s kind of appropriate for me to make you wait until the third sentence of the post to tell you that. Clever, I know.

There are some things that should test the patience of every one of us. Waiting for summons for a badly-organised pug, being told at level 7 that “the game starts at 80″, the pizza that you ordered 34 minutes ago that promised to be delivered in half an hour, the list goes on. Then we have the less worthy frustrations that we will all at some point have someone whinging about in our face.

Our Survey Says: To EZMode or not to EZMode?

That is the question.

For those who aren’t aware, Icecrown Citadel zone-wide buffs have gone live on US servers (my gnomes tell me it’s not live for us yet, which can only mean it’s coming tomorrow). The current buff will give a 5% increase to your health, damage and healing done, which is a pretty big increase when you think about it. It’s very likely that higher percentage buffs will be activated over time.

The catch here is that these buffs are optional, but either the whole raid takes them or the whole raid doesn’t so far as I can tell. There are bound to be disagreements among those who would rather get a “clean” kill and those who just want to get through the bosses as quickly as possible, but if it were up to you which camp would you fall into?

Do you plan to take advantage of the new Icecrown buffs?
