Devil’s Advocate – Do I want WoW to stay as the dominant MMO?

Interesting question I seen on MMO-Champion. Do I want WoW to stay on top?

World of Warcraft is a game I’ve sunk years into and spent a lot of money on, in subscriptions and expansions. I’ve made some very good friends there, friends I’ve carried out of the game and into the real world. I’ve written articles about the game, reviews about it. I’ve written a comic about it and various game design articles about various features of WoW.

I have invested a lot into this game. But do I want it to stay on top?

The answer is No.

Erland….. quitting WoW since 2005!

Once again that dastardly Erland is quitting WoW, not all of you have had the pleasure of meeting this cheeky chappy, if you have, well you know that Erland has been quitting WoW since 2005.

This time however it looks more permanent, he has hung up his bow for good and flogged his character to some poor unsuspecting noob who on login (if they dont have the intelligence to name/server change) will be inundated with whispers from people asking if they can pull his tail and by “people” I mean me.

The History of ED

A very interesting forum post cropped up this week asking about the ye olde days of our little realm.

It’s nice to see that people obviously remember who gets what server first, or who is a PvP god, for years after the actual event.

Personally, I joined WoW too late to hit 60 before TBC hit and was pretty much out of the loop (as we all know, when you join it’s more about “OMG I’m riding a kitty!” than “Oh I wonder which raiding guilds are the best”). During the first expansion, since I was now running a guild, I did a much better job of keeping up to date with what was going on. However, nobody can really argue that Scarab Lord, or being the most progressed guild in Naxx 1.0 is not more impressive than a server first Kara clear.

Realm Christmas Party. Or Not?

Most of us who hang around the realm forums have probably seen the thread and /facepalmed in real life.

For those who don’t know the legend of Thealmightyf (and I don’t use the word “legend” in a good way, Theal, don’t get too excited) he was previously known for reminding people why they usually have trade chat switched off. Now however, in the aftermath of his 13th birthday, he is striving to convince the realm that the old widely-ignored kid is gone and a mature(r) guy is taking his place.

Part of this effort has involved apologising for past behaviour. Fair enough, it’s certainly needed, but personally I don’t see the majority buying it. As a further bit of goodwill then, Thealmightyf and (presumably they’re in on it since he mentions them so much) his guild StormGuard would like to invite us all to their realm Christmas party.
